Stephanie recently enjoyed a wonderful weekend stay at Whale Huys in De Kelders with her family.

After a long week at work we were excited to travel to the Whale Coast to visit the lovely town of De Kelders for the weekend. Already packed and ready to head off we started the scenic 2 hour journey to the Overberg region on a beautiful Friday morning.

Along the way we stopped off in Grabouw in the breath-taking Elgin Valley for a late breakfast. We arrived at Whale Huys later that afternoon and were warmly welcomed by our hostess, Jenene. She gave us a quick tour of this beautiful holiday home and left us to settle in. After quickly unpacking the car we retired to the living area to dig into the very thoughtful welcome package left for us, filled with delicious goodies that my toddler could simply not resist.

We headed off to the nearby shopping village (very handy!) to get some goodies for supper, which we enjoyed back at the villa, out on the beautiful sun-deck, with amazing sea views. We were fortunate enough to watch the most amazing sunset that evening.
Whale Huys really does have one of the most spectacular views, perched right on the ocean’s edge. This wonderfully luxurious holiday villa is self-catering and boasts 4 en-suite bedrooms, a convenient open-plan living area and an amazing sea-front balcony with uninterrupted, panoramic sea views.

After a very relaxing first night, we awoke refreshed and ready to start the day. Although I must admit, it was a tad difficult to actually get out of the super cosy bed with its superb quality bedding!

We whipped up a lekker brekkie, cleaned ourselves up and headed out for some fresh air. Following a really lovely private path we were able to head down to the ocean right below the villa. There we enjoyed picking up some sea shell treasures and even explored some interesting caves.

As some chilly weather was heading our way, we walked back to the villa and lit a cosy fire. The large comfy couches where perfect for relaxing while we sipped on some much-needed hot chocolate to warm up and spent a while catching up on some TV time.

Later on, out on the balcony we unexpectedly spotted a Southern Right Whale – who really put on quite a show! It breached numerous times – such a magical sight to see! (Whale Huys is also equipped with its very own telescope, which of course really came in handy.) After all the excitement we headed inside for a peaceful afternoon nap …

For dinner that evening we headed down to the pool level of the villa. On this level guests will find a smaller kitchen/bar area, outdoor braai area and sparkling infinity pool. We made full use of the bar and braai area – sipping on sundowners while watching a truly mesmerising sunset.

The following morning we again were visited by two more Southern Right Whales, also breaching, sailing and lobtailing. What an incredible experience.

This was our first time visiting the Whale Coast during Whale season and I have to say we were totally blown away, all the more so as we really felt right at home at Whale Huys. This spacious villa is the perfect holiday destination for a family looking to enjoy some adventure while still being able to take pleasure in really luxurious accommodation. We’ll definitely be back again soon.
