With so many beautiful place in South Africa how did you choose De Kelders? We stumbled upon Gansbaai and the Overberg about ten years ago. A friend of a friend opened a nature lodge in the area, and we immediately fell in the love with the area. With stressful jobs in Europe, our holidays are about unwinding and peace and quiet, and this seems to be the perfect area for this. The nature is amazing with the areas amazing diversity of fynbos. It was only afterwards that I learned about the amazing richness of the Cape Floristic Kingdom. Nowhere in the world do they have such a diverse floral ecosystem.

With our house being right on Walker Bay, I couldn’t forget to mention the whales. Having spent most of my life in an urban environment, the only wildlife I saw on a regular basis were birds and ducks (oh yeah, ducks are also birds!) Coming from this background seeing such amazingly large marine mamals while drinking your morning coffee is just magical I hope always keep that sense of wonder when I see these beautiful creatures.

De Kelders also has a lot of other advantages, which made our choice easy. It’s northern exposure makes the climate just that little bit better than the other side of the peninsula. It’s a safe neighborhood, and from the beginning everyone we met there was very friendly. It has a cozy small town feeling without feeling too insular.

The proximity to nature for walks and horseback riding on the one hand and the range of nice restaurants in nearby Stanford make the place an easy place to live. Our adventure is only starting, but I think we are going to like it here.
